Why venues ask for wedding insurance
Hotels, barns, estates, country clubs, and private estates often require the couple (or the hosting party) to carry special event liability insurance and to name the venue as an additional insured on a certificate of insurance. Without it, your booking can be delayed or cancelled.

What wedding liability insurance typically helps with
Special event liability policies are generally designed to respond to claims such as:
- A guest slips on a dance floor or outdoor aisle
- Someone damages venue property (mirrors, flooring, landscaping)
- A claim arises from alcohol served at a hosted bar (when host liquor liability applies)
They are not the same as wedding cancellation or postponement insurance, which is a different product focused on financial losses if the wedding cannot proceed. Ask during the quote process if you need both types of protection.
Details: What event insurance covers.
Who usually buys the policy
- The couple named on the venue contract
- Parents or another host paying for the reception
- A family member acting as the responsible party for the rental agreement
Use the name and address that match your venue paperwork so the COI lines up with what the venue expects.
Alcohol at the reception
If you are serving alcohol — open bar, beer and wine, champagne toast — ask whether host liquor liability is included or available. Many venues require it when alcohol is present. See Host liquor liability.
