General Liability Insurance
General liability insurance for event businesses — third-party injury, property damage, and how GL differs from one-day event insurance and COIs.
General liability insurance is the core third-party liability coverage many venues, landlords, and clients expect from an operating business. It is designed for ongoing operations — not a single wedding or party date.
What it commonly addresses
- Bodily injury claims involving clients, guests, or the public
- Property damage to someone else’s premises or belongings
- Personal and advertising injury claims such as certain libel or advertising disputes
What it is not
- A substitute for a one-day special event policy when a venue requires the host to carry event insurance
- Automatic coverage for professional advice mistakes (that is often E&O)
- Workers’ compensation for employee injuries
Event professionals
Photographers, DJs, caterers, planners, and other vendors often start with business liability through Thimble. If online quoting is not the right fit, review agency coverage.

Common questions
- Is general liability the same as event insurance?
- No. General liability is usually for ongoing business operations. One-day special event insurance is often what a venue requires from the host or renter for a specific celebration date.
- Do vendors need general liability for venue COIs?
- Many venues ask photographers, DJs, caterers, and other vendors for a certificate of insurance showing general liability limits, often with the venue as additional insured.
- Can a business GL policy replace the couple’s wedding insurance?
- Usually not. Venues often want the host’s event policy in addition to vendor certificates. Treat host event coverage and vendor business coverage as separate documents.
